How to Love a Dog

A door opens

A hand reaches out in greeting

From inside:

The rushing of streams and rivers

The wind blowing through trees

The giggling of young children

A young man and woman at play

An old man hobbling down the road

A dog wags her tail and looks up expectantly

This collection of poems

is really a collection of stories. There are, of course, stories about dogs. But there are coyotes, deer, a horde of crows, numerous mice and voles, an owl, even a porcupine among all the creatures who find their way into this book.

There are also stories about us, the humans who co-inhabit this earth with all of the other creatures. After all, how can you love a dog, as beautiful and kind and affectionate as he or she may be, if you can’t also love the humans who are part of the mix.

So there are stories and little portraits of men and women, of children and old folks as well. Some are joyful. Some are sad. You will find grief, suffering, humor, comfort and celebration, told with poignancy and compassion.
